South Korean Regulator: “Cryptocurrencies May Be Subject to Securities Laws”

South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) Governor Lee Bok-hyun said he did not agree with the exclusion of cryptocurrencies from the class of financial instruments or securities.

Lee Bok Hyeon (Lee Bok-Hyeon) made his statement as part of a press conference at the FSS headquarters. He noted that the status of cryptocurrencies should be determined by the regulator. However, prosecutors should also have such a right.

“I do not agree with the opinion that some virtual assets do not have features that take them out of the notions of financial investment products or securities. As a lawyer, as a person responsible for financial matters, I believe that, subject to certain requirements, cryptocurrencies can be defined as securities, ”said the South Korean FSS manager.

Earlier, a Seoul court issued an arrest warrant for Terraform Labs CEO Do Kwon and five top project managers in connection with violations of South Korean securities laws.
