South Sudan: 89 people have died from an unknown disease

Russia’s consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said today it was closely monitoring the situation with an unknown disease in South Sudan, following a report on Tuesday by the South African radio station SABC, which said: The World Health Organization (WHO) has already sent a special team to South Sudan’s Jongley State, which has become the epicenter of the disease, to conduct emergency investigations.

According to the South African radio station, at least 89 people have died in recent weeks from an unknown disease in the eastern part of South Sudan.

International organizations operating in South Sudan say at least 89 people have died from the disease. For their part, local authorities are talking about a number of deaths from the disease, the nature of which has not been possible to determine. Most of the sufferers live in areas that were hit in 2021 by the worst floods in 60 years. It was initially thought to be a case of cholera, but this was not confirmed

Today, the Russian consumer health regulator Rospotrebnadzor announced that it is closely monitoring the situation with the unknown disease in South Sudan, noting that the risks of transmitting the disease to Russia are practically non-existent.

“Rospotrebnadzor is closely monitoring the situation in South Sudan. Sanitary measures in the territory of the Russian Federation at this time allow us to avoid the transmission of infectious diseases from African countries, especially from South Sudan (there is no direct air connection) “The risk of spreading the disease to Russia is virtually non-existent,” the statement said.
