Southern Brazil has a warning for rain and river floods

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) drew attention, this Wednesday (11), to three situations involving intense rain in southern Brazil. The most serious alert is for the north and west regions of Rio Grande do Sul and the extreme west of Santa Catarina.

In localities, rainfall of more than 60 mm/h, wind gusts of more than 100 km/h and hail are expected. Inmet projects a high risk of damage to buildings, electricity cuts, damage to plantations, falling trees, flooding and disruption to road transport.

In the same region, in the west of Rio Grande do Sul, the state’s Civil Defense warns of flooding of the Uruguay River.

Another Inmet alert, this time orange, drew attention to the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul, the west, center and south of Santa Catarina and the extreme south of Paraná.

Until 9pm [horário de Brasília] This Wednesday, rain between 30 and 60 mm/h, winds of up to 100 km/h and hail are expected in the region.

According to Inmet, there is a risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling trees and flooding.

An alert from the Civil Defense of Santa Catarina indicates the return of storms to the state at least until Thursday morning (12), with emphasis on the western regions, Planaltos and throughout Vale do Itajaí.

The high risk of flooding and flash floods can lead to roofing, damage to the electrical network and falling branches and trees in the region.

In the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre and in the center of Rio Grande do Sul, there is a warning for rain of up to 30mm/h, intense winds, which can reach up to 60km/h and hail. However, according to Inmet, there is a low risk of electricity cuts, damage to plantations, falling tree branches and flooding in the locality.
