Southern region has storm forecast over the weekend

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the weekend will be a storm in the southern region of the country. This Friday (27), the weather becomes highly unstable again, especially between the northwest/north of Rio Grande do Sul and the west and mid-west of Santa Catarina, with conditions for thunderstorms, accompanied by gusts of wind, which they can exceed 90 km/h, and possible hail in some parts of these areas.

Instability remains strong on Saturday (28), when the storms are expected to spread to other areas of Santa Catarina and Paraná. The forecast indicates large volumes of rain, with 24-hour totals greater than 100 millimeters.

On Sunday (29), the largest volumes of rain will be concentrated between Santa Catarina and Paraná.

At the beginning of next week, the tendency is for areas of instability with conditions for storms to persist in the southern portion of the country. As a result, rainfall accumulated in seven days could exceed 300 millimeters in some locations.

The concern is greater because since September the South Region has already been feeling the damage caused by the rain.

Santa Catarina

At least 3.6 million people were directly or indirectly affected in recent weeks by rain damage (47% of the population of SC). There are now 153 municipalities that have declared an emergency situation (52% of the total number of cities in Santa Catarina and 45% of the state GDP). Four cities declared a public calamity due to the damage caused by the floods. The government estimates that the sum of material damage and public and private losses in the State is approximately R$1.2 billion.

Paraná

The latest Civil Defense report, released this Thursday (26), indicates that, at the moment, 121,825 people are affected by the rain, although 1,138 remain homeless and 10,119 displaced. Additionally, one person is still missing. Across Paraná, 91 cities were affected, and more than 12,500 homes were damaged.

Twenty-eight municipalities remain in an emergency situation: Capanema, Cascavel, Clevelândia, Dois Vizinhos, General Carneiro, Ivaiporã, Jardim Alegre, Mallet, Mangueirinha, Nova Prata do Iguaçu, Palmeira, Paula Freitas, Paulo Frontin, Peabiru, Pinhão, Pitanga, Porto Amazonas, Prudentópolis, Rebouças, Rio Azul, Rio Negro, Roncador, Santa Izabel do Oeste, São João do Triunfo, São Jorge do Oeste, São José dos Pinhais, São Mateus do Sul, União da Vitória and Virmond.

Rio Grande do Sul

In September, the government of Rio Grande do Sul classified the action of an extratropical cyclone as the biggest natural disaster in the state’s history. At least 50 people died.

In an interview with CNN, Climatempo meteorologist Maria Clara Sassaki said that some cities in Rio Grande do Sul recorded, in just the first week, all the rain forecast for the month of September.

The high accumulated rainfall caused the second largest flood in the history of the Taquari River, which reached 29.62 meters. The biggest flood ever recorded happened in 1941, when the river reached 29.92 meters.
