S&P 500 Index opens lower after long weekend, hovers above 4,500

At time of writing, the S&P 500 Index was down 0.25% on the day at 4,524, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was losing 0.5% to 35,195, and the Nasdaq Composite was little changed at 15,380.
