The major stock indices in the US They started the day on a mixed note Wednesday amid mixed results from major sectors. At time of writing, the S&P 500 Index was up 0.2% on the day to 3,835, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.25% to 30,614 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.33% to 13,500.
However, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), Wall Street’s fear gauge, is down nearly 4%, reflecting a relatively optimistic mood in the market.
Among the top 11 sectors of the S&P 500, the Ind., 1% as the best performer after the opening bell. On the other hand, the real estate index is down 0.5%.
Hours earlier, data released by the Automatic Data Processing Research Institute (ADP) showed private-sector employment in the U.S. increased by 174,000 in January, compared with analysts’ forecast of 49,000.
