S&P 500 Index opens modestly lower, energy stocks continue to rise

The main stock indices opened modestly lower on Monday as trading conditions remain poor due to the Columbus Day holiday in the United States. At the time of writing, the S&P 500 Index was down 0.1% on the day to 4,388, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was unchanged at 34,730, and the Nasdaq Composite was losing 0.1% to 14,562.

Among the top 11 sectors, the Energy Index is rising 1% after the opening bell supported by a rise of more than 2% seen in US crude oil prices. risk-sensitive communication is losing 0.65%.

There will be no high-level data releases on the US economic docket on Monday and trade action is likely to remain subdued.
