S&P 500 opens with modest gains above 3,800

  • The major Wall Street indices post small gains on Tuesday.
  • Stocks in the energy sector are rising sharply due to rising oil prices.
  • The defensive sectors lag behind after the opening bell.

The main stock indices in the US have started the second day of the week modestly higher amid different results from the main sectors. At the time of writing, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is virtually unchanged on the day at 30,984, the S&P 500 Index is up 0.1% at 3,802, and the Nasdaq Composite is up 0.25% at 12,935.

The sharp rebound in crude oil prices appears to be helping energy stocks to gain ground. Right now, the Power Sector Index is up 1.1% as the top performing S&P 500 sector. On the other hand, the defensive, real estate, utilities and healthcare sectors fell between 0.3% and 0.7%.

Hours earlier, the NFIB reported that December’s Small Business Optimism Index worsened to 95.9 from 101.4 in November, but this report was largely ignored by market participants.
