SP: almost 40% of arrests of inmates during their release occurred in the capital

After three days of “leaving” in São Paulo, 416 inmates were recaptured in the state until the morning of this Friday (20).

Around 40% of the arrests of inmates on temporary release occurred in the capital of São Paulo and Greater São Paulo.

The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported that, of the total number of prisoners caught violating the judicial rules of the benefit, this Thursday (19), 167 were in the city of São Paulo and the Metropolitan Region.

In the interior of São Paulo, the police managed to recapture 249 prisoners, 70 in the Ribeirão Preto region, 34 in Sorocaba, 30 in São José do Rio Preto, 25 in Piracicaba, 24 in the São José dos Campos region, 32 in Campinas, 17 in Presidente Prudente, 13 in Santos, 11 in Bauru and two in Araçatuba.

The Military Police arrested 157 inmates on Tuesday (17), the first day of “release” in SP. All have already been returned to the prison system.

The SSP states that, after being arrested again, criminals are taken to the Forensic Medical Institute (IML) for a forensic examination. They are then taken to the Provisional Detention Centers or the Women’s Penitentiary.

The secretariat also states that this is the third temporary release of prisoners granted by the Court in São Paulo in 2024.

In the last one, carried out between June 11 and 17, 677 inmates were recaptured across the state by security forces.

Among the measures that must be followed are:

  • Remain in the city informed to the Judiciary;
  • Do not stay on the streets at night;
  • Do not go to bars, nightclubs or get involved in fights;
  • Do not commit any act considered serious by the courts.
