SP asks for release to apply booster of the 4th dose for people over 35 years old

The Municipal Health Department of São Paulo asked the Ministry of Health this Tuesday (5th) for authorization to apply the fourth dose (2nd booster dose) of the vaccine against Covid-19 in people over 35 years old. In the office, the folder also asks for more immunizing agents.

“The forecast is 1 million doses for this age group. As soon as the Ministry of Health authorizes and sends the necessary doses, we will start the vaccination”, confirmed the Secretary of Health, Luiz Carlos Zamarco, to the newspaper “O Estado de S. Paulo”.

Since June 27, adults over 40 years of age are being vaccinated with the fourth dose in the city of São Paulo. The Ministry of Health has not yet given the green light for immunization of the younger public, except in some cases, such as those of immunosuppressed and health professionals. The recommendation of the Ministry of Health is that the immunization is done with the vaccines from Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Janssen, four months after the application of the first booster (third dose).

Although the ministry has not yet given the green light, governments have already started to allow the application of the fourth dose of the vaccine against covid-19 in people under 40 years old, amid the increase in cases and deaths from the new coronavirus. The average number of cases increased by 42%, with 57,000 infections per day. The average number of deaths also continues to rise, 45% on Monday, with 214 deaths per day, according to data from the state health departments gathered by the press consortium.

The Federal District announced last Thursday (30) the beginning of the application of the second booster dose for the population over 35 years old from July 1st. Already the city of Manaus authorized on Friday, 1st, the 4th dose vaccination for people from 18 years. Aracaju also already vaccinates the population over 35 years old, while in Vitória people over 30 years old are already eligible to receive the booster dose.

The application of booster doses is a response to studies that show that, over time, the levels of neutralizing antibodies generated by vaccines fall, especially among the elderly.
