SP City Hall bans asylum where 6 died after fire on Saturday (10)

The City Hall of Sao Paulo reported this Monday (12) that it banned the clandestine nursing home in the São Mateus neighborhood, in the East Zone of the capital, where a fire left six dead last Saturday (10).

The residence has four rooms — two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen — and it did not have a permit or open application in the Subprefecture to function as an asylum.

According to the city hall, the ban takes place “because of the risk existing in the continued use of the property in its current conditions, posing a serious threat to the physical integrity of its occupants, neighbors or passers-by”. The owner of the property has already been charged.

According to the municipal management, the establishment was banned twice by the health surveillance, at different addresses. Currently, the clandestine institute was located on Phobus Street, at number 417.

There is also an ongoing administrative sanitary process against the place for sanitary irregularities that constituted a high risk to the health of the elderly.

The Civil Defense found that the fire was concentrated in one of the rooms, causing damage to the slab. The other rooms showed no structural damage.

According to information from the Fire Department, the elderly did not notice the spread of the flames because they were possibly sleeping at the time. When the company arrived at the scene, the fire was already extinguished.

Firefighters were called by a caregiver during the shift change.

In addition to the six dead, including an employee, two women were rescued and taken to the Emergency Room in Sapopemba, also in São Paulo.

THE CNN try to contact the owner of the nursing home.
