SP City Hall fines podcast “Abandoned House” for lack of cleanliness

The City of São Paulo issued a fine for a large house in the Higienópolis neighborhood, which became famous after becoming the scene of the podcast “A Mulher da Casa Abandonada”, by journalist Chico Felitti, from Folha de S. Paulo.

According to the authorities, through the Sé Subprefecture, the house was inspected and notified on the 4th.

“At the site, it was found that there was garbage and construction materials on the outside of the property, which led to the notification of the owner, in addition to the issuance of a summons to carry out maintenance and cleaning of the place within a period of up to 60 days” , informed the City Hall in a note.

“Abandoned House” was shot, says Margarida Bonetti’s sister to police

During the week, the Civil Police of São Paulo heard Margarida Bonetti’s sister, Rosa Vicente de Azevedo, in the police investigation that investigates the abandonment of a disabled person by Margarida Bonetti – the central character of the Folha podcast.

Rosa informed that her sister left the place after the repercussion of the case, which went viral on the internet and on television, due to the number of people who went to the place, which was even shot, according to the testimony.

The audio report, which goes by the name of ‘The Woman in the Abandoned House’ tells that Margarida was investigated by the FBI, the investigative police department of the United States in 1998 for work analogous to slavery and false imprisonment against her maid; her husband, René Bonetti, was tried in 2000 and served time in an American prison, but she returned to Brazil and lives in an ‘abandoned’ house in the Higienópolis neighborhood.

Rosa informed the police that her sister is well treated, has everything she needs and that she is completely fine in terms of her mental health, which, however, was not indicated in the statements.

According to the investigation, neighbors on Piauí Street called the police reporting that “there was a person there who has mental health problems, and who would be in need of help”.

Witnesses reported that Margarida used to throw excrement in the backyard of the house, which has no sewage treatment or water; that she rummaged through the garbage left on the street and that she created situations, for example, with cars parked in front of the house and trees being knocked down.

The delegate responsible for the investigation, Roberto Monteiro, from the 1st Sectional of the Center, said that the Police will only be able to verify if the house was actually hit or not after an on-site investigation, which there is still no forecast to be carried out.

The Municipality of São Paulo must also return to the Higienópolis property within 60 days, since an inspection found the existence of garbage and construction materials on the outside of the house, and therefore, the owner was notified and summoned to carry out maintenance, under penalty for further assessments.

Margarida’s son, whose name was not revealed, was also invited to testify, but has not yet appeared at the police station. Rosa informed that she would introduce her sister to the authorities when she is subpoenaed.

Regarding the rescue of two dogs on June 3 by Instituto Luisa Mell, which would have been abandoned in the property with Margarida’s departure, the delegate informed that she could be held accountable for the crime of mistreatment of animals.

There is the possibility of still having cats inside the house. She may also respond for “exposure to danger” (exposing the life or health of another to direct and imminent danger; article 132 of the Penal Code) for the accumulation of garbage in the backyard, which generated an incidence of rats.

There is no prison sentence for this crime, but there is a possibility of imprisonment from three months to one year.
