If it depends on the city of São Paulo, legal abortions will no longer be carried out at the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha Municipal Hospital. The decision was taken by the health secretary, Luiz Carlos Zamarco and confirmed to CNN . The department will carry out a survey of the procedures carried out in the units, as it suspects irregularities.
The decision will be upheld in court in a process that charges women in the service. In December last year, the procedure was no longer offered at the unit located in the north of the capital.
A preliminary decision, handed down by judge Adler Batista Oliveira Nobre, from the 9th Public Finance Court of the state's Court of Justice, gives two options to municipal management: resume procedures at the hospital or refer all women elsewhere, but not prevent or delay care for any patient.
According to an excerpt from the decision, the magistrate accepts that the city “chooses, instead of reactivating the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha Hospital and Maternity service, to be responsible for promoting the rescheduling of the procedure in other public health units and for referring new patients and patients who had the procedure cancelled.”
The path chosen was this second one. Four hospitals will meet the demand that was directed to Cachoeirinha: Mário Degni, Tatuapé, Tide Setúbal and Campo Limpo. In the city hall's view, the measure complies with the court decision.
Suspected irregularities
A CNN , Luiz Carlos Zamarco also said that he ordered his team to carry out a survey to understand why the majority of women who had legal abortions in Cachoeirinha in 2023 came from outside the capital of São Paulo. He suspects irregularities in the flow of care. If the suspicion persists, he must request an investigation.
