SP: Civil Defense warns of forecast of more winds and rain over the weekend

With around 100 thousand homes still without power due to the heavy rains that hit the metropolitan region of São Paulo last Friday (11), the state expected to face new showers and strong winds later this week .

The Civil Defense of São Paulo is expected to release, later this Wednesday (16), a warning for new gusts of wind and heavy rain in the state next weekend. According to the agency, the forecast for the arrival of pre-frontal rain should change the weather in the state starting this Thursday (17).

Last Friday (11), the metropolitan region of São Paulo experienced rain with the highest gust of wind ever recorded in the metropolitan region since 1995, with winds of 107.6 km/h. The storm left seven people dead and millions of people without electricity.

According to the new Civil Defense forecast, the rain forecast for this week may be weaker than previously recorded. This is because, last week, the state was under the influence of a hot air mass which may have enhanced the pre-frontal rain after the thermal shock caused by the arrival of the cold front.

This Thursday (17), the cold front should arrive, coming from the south of Brazil, and encounter milder temperatures than are currently recorded in the state. Therefore, the occurrence of this thermal shock shouldn’t happen . Therefore, the expectation is that the gusts of wind will not be as strong as last week.

Even so, Civil Defense warns that forecasts are changeable and the pre-frontal rain, which is expected to occur, is always accompanied by strong winds . Therefore, the population must be alert to possible occurrences of falling trees, for example.

The forecast indicates that, between Thursday and Friday, the winds should occur with greater intensity. Between Saturday (19) and Sunday (20) a greater accumulation of water is expected, with more intense storms accompanied by lightning.

Although the forecast is for significant amounts of rain, the state is experiencing a recent drought, and therefore the occurrence of landslides is not expected.
