The city of São Paulo faced an afternoon of chaos on Friday (24) due to heavy rains that hit several regions of the capital.
The City’s Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) issued a severe alert to the population, warning of the risk of flooding and other inconvenience.
Rodrigo Fernandes João, deputy director of CGE, explained in an interview with CNN 360º This Friday (24) that the alert was issued at 3:57 pm, especially to the North, Central and part of the South Zone, including the Morumbi neighborhood.
“Civil Defense seeks, through this warning, to minimize risks to the entire population, especially life risks and even material damage,” he said.
Alert system and impacts on the city
The recently implemented Civil Defense Alert System has sent messages to 4G or 5G technology mobile phones in the affected areas.
This was the first warning of this type issued to the state capital, although it has been used 18 times in other regions of the state since December.
The impacts of rain were significant. There was a partial suspension of subway operation, congestion, flooding points and areas without electricity.
The Fire Department was called for several occurrences, including tree falls.
Continuous monitoring and future forecasts
João stressed that CGE maintains monitoring 24 hours a day, with a technical team of meteorologists following meteorological and radar systems.
“If, possibly, in a few hours, or tomorrow, or next week this situation occurs again, a new warning will be issued,” explained the deputy director.
The population is oriented to remain on alert and search for safe places during severe weather events. The CGE will continue to monitor the situation and issue alerts as necessary to ensure the safety of São Paulo citizens.
