In the month of September, the basic food basket in the city of São Paulo was the most expensive among Brazilian capitals, informed this Thursday (6th) the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese) in the National Survey of Basic Food Baskets.

In the month of September, the average cost of the basic food basket in the capital of São Paulo was R$ 750.74, the highest value among the 17 Brazilian capitals analyzed in the research. Then came the basic food basket from Florianópolis (R$746.55), Porto Alegre (R$743.94) and Rio de Janeiro (R$714.14).

In the cities of the North and Northeast, where the composition of the basket is different, the lowest average values were registered in Aracaju (R$ 518.68), Salvador (R$ 560.31), João Pessoa (R$ 562.32) and Recife (R$ 580.01).

In September, 12 of the 17 Brazilian capitals analyzed by Dieese showed a drop in the cost of the basket. The most important reductions occurred in Aracaju (-3.87%), Recife (-3.03%), Salvador (-2.88%) and Belém (-1.95%). The biggest increases were registered in Belo Horizonte (1.88%), Campo Grande (1.83%), Natal (0.14%), São Paulo (0.13%) and Florianópolis (0.05%).

Considering the entire year of 2022, between January and September, the cost of the basic food basket rose in all Brazilian capitals surveyed. The greatest increase was observed in Belém (11.78%), followed by Campo Grande (10.87%), Brasília (10.56%), Goiânia (10.29%) and João Pessoa (10.08%).

Based on the most expensive basket [a de São Paulo] and taking into account the constitutional determination that the minimum wage must be sufficient to meet the expenses of a worker and his family with food, housing, health, education, clothing, hygiene, transportation, leisure and welfare, Dieese estimated that the minimum wage should have been R$6,306.97 in September, or 5.20 times the current minimum wage of R$1,212.00.
