SP has an occupancy of Covid beds below 20% in most hospitals, says survey

A survey carried out by the Union of Hospitals, Clinics and Laboratories of the State of São Paulo (SindHosp) pointed to a significant drop in hospitalizations for Covid-19 in private hospitals in the state.

According to the survey, 67% of the 72 hospitals consulted present an occupancy of beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the disease below 20%. Regarding hospitalizations in clinical beds, 72% of hospitals have up to 20% of beds for Covid-19 occupied.

The availability of ICU beds is one of the indicators used by managers and health authorities in monitoring the epidemiological scenario of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The research also points to a prevalence of elderly patients, between 60 and 79 years old, in Covid-19 ICUs in 76% of the private hospitals surveyed. In 12% of hospitals, the occupation is patients over 80 years old.

The survey was carried out between March 7 and 14, with 72 private hospitals, which add up to 7,937 beds, of which 1,650 are adult ICUs and 168 beds are pediatric ICUs. The distribution is 22% in the capital of São Paulo and 78% in the countryside. In the survey carried out between February 1st and 9th, the rate of hospitals with occupancy of up to 20% was 18%.

Doctor Francisco Balestrin, president of SindHosp, believes that the high rate of vaccination has contributed to the drop in the number of hospitalizations.

Among children, ICU admission for Covid-19 is below 20% in 96.7% of the hospitals consulted by the survey that have pediatric ICUs.

Hospitalizations in clinical beds is also low at the moment: 72% of hospitals have up to 20% of clinical beds for Covid-19 occupied. For this type of bed, 45% of patients are between 60 and 79 years old and 44% are between 51 and 59 years old.

In the urgency and emergency sector, 49% of consultations are for patients aged between 30 and 50 years and 35% in the age group of 60 to 79 years.

According to the survey, 93% of hospitals reported that they have installed capacity to increase the number of beds destined for Covid-19.

Removal of professionals

The SindHosp survey also points out that 48% of hospitals reported having difficulties in caring for patients with Covid-19 caused by the removal of professionals due to health problems. Leave rates are between 6% and 10% in more than half of the hospitals.

On the other hand, the cancellation rate of elective surgeries is low: 58.5% of hospitals report up to 20% of cancellations while 41.5% claim to operate normally.
