The fire risk maps from the Civil Defense of São Paulo indicate a high possibility of fires in part of the state, reaching emergency level.
Weather models indicate that no rain is forecast until early August, which increases the risk of fires, critical levels of air quality and harm to public health.
The northwest region of the state is the one that requires the most attention, with relative humidity levels below 20%. Cities such as Ribeirão Preto, Barretos and São José do Rio Preto are expected to record temperatures ranging from 13°C to 34°C in the coming days.
Other areas of São Paulo may suffer from relative humidity below 30%, which still represents a risk of fires.
Civil Defense explains that the lack of rain and low relative humidity increases the risk throughout the state of São Paulo.
According to the state government’s Secretariat for the Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, of the 158 fires in protected areas in the state in 2023, more than 90% were caused by human action and could have been avoided.
The thermal amplitude will also be large in other regions of SP, with temperatures varying between 4°C in Vale do Paraíba and 33°C in Presidente Prudente.
The State Civil Defense reported that it will intensify actions and climate monitoring during the dry season. The agency warns about health care, which should include constant hydration and protection from the sun.
