One mother and daughter convicted of murder were recaptured, on the morning of this Wednesday (18), after failing to comply with precautionary measures during the temporary release of prisoners in Osasco in Greater São Paulo (SP).
According to the Public Security Department (SSP), the pair were caught 40 kilometers from the city they had indicated to the courts to be entitled to the benefit. The inmates, aged 60 and 34, are sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.
The mother and daughter were monitored by electronic ankle bracelets in real time and were caught in the Santa Maria neighborhood as they prepared to get into a car using an app, according to the SSP.
The equipment sent an alert to the Military Police Operations Center (Copom) as soon as the pair left their hometown and went to Osasco. During the approach, the inmates showed their prison documents to the police officers, who confirmed that the precautionary measures had not been complied with.
According to the Military Police, the mother and daughter are serving sentences of 21 and 24 years, respectively, for a homicide in 2015, in São Vicente, on the coast of São Paulo. The youngest also has a police record for procedural fraud.
In a statement, the Public Security Department stated that the two underwent a forensic examination at the Osasco Legal Medical Institute and were taken to the city’s 2nd Police District.
Temporary exit
Around 33 thousand inmates left the more than 180 prisons in São Paulo during the third temporary release of prisoners, known as ‘saidinha’, which takes place between this Tuesday (17) and next Monday (23).
In total, the state of São Paulo offers five temporary releases per year. The benefit is granted to semi-open regime prisoners who, by the date of release, have served one-sixth of their sentence if they are first-time offenders or one-quarter of their total sentence in the case of repeat offenders.
On this first day of ‘leaving’, the Military Police arrested 157 inmates who failed to comply with rules imposed by the Court to have the right to temporary release.
