SP police identifies R $ 9.6 billion from money laundering

The São Paulo Civil Police LaB-LD Technology Laboratory (LAB-LD) identified just over R $ 9.6 billion in illicit financial flows in 2024. In one year, the amount grew 113%, according to investigators.

To hide the appeal, criminals used “legitimate” companies from various branches, such as gas stations, hotels and vehicle dealers, in order to try to hide the illegal origin of resources.

The specialized team that is part of the Civil Police Center “follows the money”, tracking and identifying the real origin of money, which comes from crimes such as estelionate, drug trafficking, corruption and others. In 2023, the total determined by the laboratory team was R $ 4.5 billion from money laundering.

The criminals expanded acting to different branches in an attempt to wash the money from organized crime. According to Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite, “These are criminals who earn millionaire figures trying to use legal or facade means to launder the money obtained illicitly.”

How does Lab-LD work work?

The São Paulo Civil Police Lab-LD has a team of more than 30 agents that have technologies that emphasize and agility to investigations. Professionals take action after requests from regional police stations to consider suspected money laundering crimes.

The Technology Laboratory against money laundering works in conjunction with the Recopera-SP program, which allocates the resources seized with organized crime to the State Public Security Fund. The values ​​are reversed in investments in state police forces, such as equipment acquisition, technology and infrastructure improvement.

Delegate Lawrence Tanikawa of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) explains that “Lab-LD conducts financial intelligence and general support measures to police units, analyzing the investigative’s assets and other data of interest. After the closing of these investigations, during the criminal action, if the values ​​blocked, arrested or hijacked assets are lost in favor of the State, by court, the recovery task of assisting in the incorporation of this heritage ”.
