As determined by CNN the confusion between São Paulo and Corinthians began on Avenida Marquês de São Vicente, about 14 kilometers from the Morumbis stadium, in the south zone. The fight began around 1pm, more than five hours before the start of the game, scheduled for 6:30pm.

Also on Sunday, the Civil Police collected images from security cameras located at the scene of the fight. They are being analyzed with the corporation’s facial recognition tools so that those involved can be identified.

According to delegate Cesar Saad, from the Police Station for the Suppression of Offenses of Sports Intolerance (Drade), the leaders of the organized supporters groups Independente and Gaviões da Fiel will be summoned to testify.

Videos recorded by witnesses show fans armed with pieces of wood and firecrackers running through the streets and between cars.

According to the Military Police, there were no reports of injuries. The police took some of those involved to board the subway at Barra Funda Station. The situation was brought under control at around 2:21 pm.

The classic valid for the Campeonato Paulista was the second match between the two teams over the weekend. On Saturday, they had already faced each other in the final of the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior. Both games were only attended by São Paulo fans at the stadium.

Since 2016, following a request from the Public Ministry, classics in São Paulo have had a single crowd, as a measure to prevent clashes between fans.
