The state of São Paulo recorded an increase in cases of personal injury against LGBTQIA+ people in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 2021.
The data were obtained via the Access to Information Law (LAI) by the production of the CNN and compared the police reports registered from January to March since 2016, the date on which they were made available.
According to data from the São Paulo Public Security Department, the first quarter of 2022 had 35 cases of bodily harm — that is, aggression — against LGBTQIA+ people.
However, it is important to emphasize that these are the cases that were, in fact, registered in Civil Police stations or online. If a case of aggression occurred without filing a report, it was not counted.
In the same period in 2021, there were 30 cases from January to March. That is, in one year, the number of police reports registered with homophobic or transphobic attacks grew by 16.6%.
In 2022, the number of registered newsletters also bucked the downward trend that had been observed since 2016.
Reports of incidents recorded for bodily harm motivated by homophobia/transphobia in the first quarter of the year:
- 2022: 35
- 2021: 30
- 2020: 42
- 2019: 42
- 2018: 50
- 2017: 62
- 2016: 68
Among the cities that registered the occurrences in 2022, the capital of São Paulo accounts for the highest number: seven. Next is Santo André, with five occurrences, and Jandira, with three.
