SP wins free book fair and will have literary tables with Mia Couto and Ailton Krenak

The first edition of Book Fair sera at Praça Charles Miller, in front of the Pacaembu Stadium, in São Paulo, and will have Mia Couto, Djamila Ribeiro, Ailton Krenak and Drauzio Varella among the guests of the literary tables.

The free event takes place between the 8th and 12th of June and is inspired by the models of street fairs common in cities like Lisbon and Madrid, in which books are displayed in parks and squares open to the public. The intention, according to the organizers, is to propose new possibilities for occupying the public and historical space of São Paulo.

The Fair will occupy an area that is usually exclusively intended for parking cars, and publishers and bookstores will be able to display their releases and collections in tents scattered throughout the area, which will be closed to traffic.

In all, there are 120 publishers and bookstores and more than 55 guests at the literary tables. The Mozambican writer Mia Couto, the Angolan Yara Nakahanda Monteiro, the French Bill François and the Spanish María Dueñas are the international guests of the event.

The official opening will be at 3 pm on Wednesday (8) and will include a poetry slam, followed by a literary table with Lilia Schwarcz and Mia Couto.

The tables and debates will be divided between the Palco da Praça, outdoors, and the Armando Nogueira Auditorium, at the Football Museum. Topics such as urbanism, human rights, science and politics will be discussed over the five days.

On Sunday (12), on Valentine’s Day, love will be the focus of the conversation between singer Letícia Letrux and writer and researcher Renato Noguera.
