“A way to rejoin the dreams, the fantasy, the wonder that these times of war and pandemic have taken away from us, sometimes forbidden”. It is with these words that Simone MarchettiDirector of Vanity Fair, introduces the new issue of the magazine, on newsstands from tomorrow Wednesday 20 April. A special edition that comes out in conjunction with the launch of the Biennale Arte and which is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between the weekly team and the curator of the great Venetian cultural event, Cecilia Alemani.
“We could have limited ourselves to interviewing Cecilia or putting her on the cover, but it seemed too obvious,” says Simone Marchetti. “So, as happened in the past with great directors like Paolo Sorrentino or with great artists like Francesco Vezzoli, last December we asked Cecilia to direct Vanity Fairto think of the newspaper as one of the pavilions of her Biennale, an editorial extension of her commitment as curator“.
Cecilia Alemani continues: «When Vanity Fair asked me to be the guest director of a special issue to coincide with the opening of the Biennale, I thought it would be interesting to understand what is the legacy of Surrealism today. It was a wonderful, rich and exciting adventure, for which I thank all my traveling companions ».
The contents collected in the issue are many and suggestive, because there are so many surrealist themes that, a century later, have become central in our lives: the transformation of bodies and identities (addressed in the interview with Miro and in the portrait dedicated to Claude Cahun) ; dreams and the oneiric dimension (revealed by the neuroscientist Giulio Bernardi); the overcoming of the concepts of madness and normality when it comes to mental health (evoked in the story by Peppe Dell’Acqua and the magnificent experience of Marco Cavallo); esotericism and magical thinking (at the center of the interview with Emma Talbot); the charm of places in the world where reality seems to fade into a fantastic dimension (suggested in a portfolio of unmissable destinations). The fashion services, those dedicated to beauty and food advice are also inspired by the surrealist seduction.
To open the doors of this special issue, an extraordinary cover story starring Sharon Stone, photographed exclusively for Vanity Fair and interviewed by the writer Chiara Barzini: a long dialogue in which the Hollywood star faces the most intimate sides of her personality. The years that go by? “They make us stronger.” The traumas of the past? “It is important to process them.” The death? “We must make friends.” The art? “And the magic of life.”
“Special thanks to Sharon Stone, her courage, one of the best interviews she has ever given us”Simone Marchetti comments at the end. «Thank you for choosing to be part of this unique project, of this magical madness that is called Vanity Fair“.
