THE France successfully put into orbit one state-of-the-art military satellite, which will assist all of its armed forces around the world -Air, Navy and Army- to communicate quickly and securely. The Syracuse 4A (Syracuse) satellite was launched on Sunday (24/10) with a European Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket from the European spacecraft in Kourou, French Guiana in South America.
Griffon armor and new Suffren submarines will be among those served by the satellite. Syracuse 4A will be followed in the future two other satellites, which will create one “Constellation” of military satellite communications, as reported by ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ.
The “smart” satellite, built by the French-Italian aerospace company Thales Alenia Space (the largest satellite manufacturer in Europe), in collaboration with Airbus Defense and Space, incorporates the most modern cyber-defense and data encryption technologies. He can monitor what is happening around him and to change position on its own, in order to avoid any attack from the ground or from space. It has, among other things, a special antenna against possible malicious interference from third parties, as well as protection against electromagnetic pulses after a nuclear explosion.

France is a pioneer in space
France’s Syracuse military satellite communications program was launched in 1980 and to date three generations of satellites have been developed between 1984 and 2015, and now the development of the fourth generation has begun. These satellites handle all military communications between the central administration in France and all French units (on land, sea and air) in theaters around the world. They provide an autonomous solution in France for large-scale and long-distance secure military telecommunications, protected from electronic warfare.
France set up a separate military space administration in 2019 amid concerns that other countries are investing heavily in space technology with military applications, according to AFP. In March this year, it began its first military exercises in space to test its capabilities to defend its satellites from threats. Is the first time a European country’s armed forces do so.
The French government, through the Minister of Defense Florence Parley, has accused Russia of spying on its satellites, as well as the office of the President Emanuel Macron has referred to other relevant incidents without giving further details. Investment in the French space program is expected to reach 4.3 billion euros by 2025, but much less than the US or China.
