Earth and the Moon appear side by side in space in a new photo taken by the JANUS camera aboard the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice).
The recording was made on September 9 this year, when the spacecraft was about 5.7 million km away from Earth and 5.3 million km from the Moon. Juice headed towards Venus after flying past Earth in August.
After passing Venus in August 2025, Juice will fly by our planet again in September 2026 and January 2029, before arriving at Jupiter in July 2031.
On the giant planet, the JANUS camera will be dedicated to recording Jupiter and its icy moons in high resolution, to study the planet, its atmosphere and its satellites.
