SpaceX and NASA send third commercial mission to International Space Station

The third manned commercial mission of the partnership between SpaceX and NASA, SpaceX Crew-3, took off for the International Space Station (ISS) this Wednesday night (10, local time) — early this Thursday (11) at Brasilia time.

After being delayed several times due to weather issues and a medical problem, the departure of the four astronauts from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, was successful.

The Crew Dragon Endurance capsule, in which the crew travels, was powered by the Falcon 9 rocket, which had already been used in June. As planned, at 2 minutes and 40 seconds after takeoff, capsule and rocket were separated. Dragon then continued the journey, while Falcon 9 returned to an unmanned platform parked in the Atlantic Ocean.

The crew is made up of American astronauts from NASA Raja Chari, Tom Marshburn and Kayla Barron and German Matthias Maurer, from the European Space Agency (ESA). They are supposed to replace the SpaceX Crew-2 mission, which returned from the ISS last Monday (8).

About 22 hours after launch, the capsule is expected to arrive at the International Station, where the new arrivals will remain for six months. During this period, they must receive groups of tourists.
