At the moment, the launch of the telescope is scheduled for June 2024. This will be implemented through the Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

SPHEREx is a telescope or spectrophotometer operating in the near infrared range. The mission is designed for 25 months, during which it is planned to carry out four complete sky surveys. Of course, it is possible that the telescope will work much longer.

As for the purpose of the mission, SPHEREx will collect data on more than 300 million galaxies and more than 100 million stars in our galaxy, create a map of the entire sky with 96 in different color stripes, and will also look for water and organic molecules – the main building blocks for the formation of known us life forms. In addition, the information collected by the telescope will serve as a foundation for further research by the James Webb Space Telescope and Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope.
