Spahn says 20% of the population is still expected to be vaccinated by the end of April

German Health Minister Jens Spahn has said that still expects 20% of the population to be vaccinated by the end of April.

Germany has administered more than 19.2 million doses of vaccines, but as of Tuesday only 6.2% of its population has been fully vaccinated.

His comments come after the country registered nearly 30,000 new coronavirus infections Thursday, the highest daily increase since Jan.8.

Earlier, the President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler, said: “The situation in hospitals is reaching a critical point, in some cases dramatically“, adding that policy makers must take tough and urgent action to contain a third wave of coronavirus.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged parliament to give the federal government temporary powers to enforce coronavirus lockdowns in areas with high infections.
