Spain: 1,180 people have died of extreme heat – women and older people most victims

High temperatures have claimed the lives of 1,180 people in the last 60 days in Spain, a number of deaths recorded in 2024, the Ministry of the Environment announced today. Most of the victims were over 65 years old and over half of them were women, according to figures cited by the ministry. The most affected areas were Galicia, La Rioha, Astourias and Gadabria – all in the northern part of the country where temperatures in the summer months were not high, but in recent years this has changed. Like other Western European countries, Spain has been faced with extreme heat in recent weeks, as the thermometer often showed over 40 degrees Celsius.
