Spain: 14 Easyjet flights canceled due to pilot strike

Fourteen international flights to or from Spain were canceled today due to the Easyjet pilots’ strike in the country, announced one of the unions that called for the mobilization.

This strike comes in addition to other social movements that other companies have started since the beginning of the summer, in the middle of the tourist season and the restart of tourist activity after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Easyjet’s Spanish pilots have for their part warned of work stoppages every weekend in August from Friday to Sunday.

In total, 14 cancellations were recorded by midday (1.30pm Spanish time), the Spanish union of airline pilots (Sepla) announced.

Six of these flights were due to depart or arrive in Barcelona, while another eight were due to or depart from Palma, Majorca.

Last week, the weekend strike resulted in 36 cancellations.

The pilots are demanding the restoration of the working conditions they had before the pandemic and new negotiations for the new collective agreement.

In the middle of the peak tourist season, Easyjet’s strike comes in addition to one by flight crews at another low-cost carrier, Ireland’s Ryanair, which has so far had a limited impact with more delays than cancellations.

Adding to these protests is the social movement by cabin crew of Iberia Express, the low-cost subsidiary of the Spanish company — which is expected to last 10 days from August 28 to September 6, according to the USO union.
