Spain: 30 years in prison for a former fighter of the Basque separatist organization ETA for a murder he committed in 2001

Its Supreme Court Spain condemn him Mikel Carrera Sarobea former fighter of the already disbanded separatist organization of the Basques ETA, to 30 years in prison, on the charge of murdering a well-known politician in 2001, according to the court decision.

Carrera, 51, who is already serving a multi-year sentence in France for multiple murders, was transferred to Spain earlier this year to stand trial for the brutal killing in the northeastern town of Taragotha.

Carrera, who was known in ETA by the nickname “Ata”, shot 53-year-old Manuel Jimenez Abad, a regional leader of the conservative Popular Party, while walking with his 17-year-old son to a soccer match on May 6, 2001. His murder had caused outrage in Spain.

The Madrid court states in its verdict dated September 18, that Carrera shot Abad twice from behind before giving him the bonus shot with a bullet to the head while he was on the ground.

The court ordered Carrera to pay the sum of 250,000 euros to Abad’s relatives.

Carrera, who was arrested in France in 2010, was taken back to France where he will serve the rest of his sentence before being sent to a prison in Spain.

Although ETA renounced the use of violence in 2011 and disbanded in 2018, many of its members who committed crimes remain unpunished. This is creating tension in Spanish society, where polarization is now growing between supporters of a unified state and those seeking more autonomy for regions of Spain or even their own independence.
