Spain: 93.6% dip was recorded in tourist arrivals amid restrictive measures

The tourist arrivals in Spain recorded a 93.6% dip on an annual basis in February as visitors stayed away from the country’s bars and beaches, which is usually the second largest number of tourists in the world, according to APE.

The international tourism in Spain it plunged 80% to 19 million visitors last year – the lowest level since 1969 – as the impact of coronavirus restrictions was felt.

This trend continued in the first two months of 2021, according to data released today by the National Statistics Office, in another bad news for the country in which tourism accounted for more than a tenth of its GDP.

Spain received 284,311 foreign tourists in February, 34.6% less than in January. International tourism revenue fell 93.3% year-on-year in February, putting many businesses at risk.

While most tourists came from France, one in four travelers in February, the number of French people fell by 87.4% from February 2020, the last month before the pandemic.

Many French people, tired of the lockdown in their own country, cross the border to go to bars and restaurants in places like Madrid.

According to estimates by the Funcas Institute, the contribution of tourism to the Spanish economy fell to 4% to 5% last year from about 12% in 2019.
