Fire burned at least 4,000 acres of nature park on its shores Catalonia, near the French-Spanish border, where 350 people were forced to flee their homes, the fire department announced today.
The fire, whose “perimeter remains unstable” and has not yet been brought under control, broke out on Friday morning in the community of Lgansa, 20 km from the French border, according to the fire department.
The fire affects the forest areas of many communities in the Cap de Creus Natural Park, a very touristic Mediterranean enclave of the Iberian Peninsula.
The fire was apparently caused by the negligence of a motorcyclist who threw a cigarette, “something that is scandalous,” Catalan Interior Minister Joan Ignacio Elena told the media after meeting with the regional fire department.
“We are going through a very complicated summer with a climate conducive to fires,” added Elena, who called on citizens to be “careful”, adding that French rescue teams had been called in to help.
More than 200 Catalan firefighters are currently trying to contain the blaze, with air support from helicopters and water bombers.
Among the 350 people evacuated from the area are residents of riparian municipalities, as well as a hundred people living in local campsites, some of whom have relocated to sports centers in the area.
Due to the hot and dry climate, the Spain, The second largest tourist destination in the world before the pandemic, is regularly affected in the summer by large forest fires which, according to experts, threaten to become more frequent and violent due to global warming.
