Spain: Bad weather cancels traditional Good Friday ceremonies

Torrential rains, following months of extreme drought, led to the cancellation of Good Friday religious events, mainly in Seville, leaving many teary-eyed worshipers in the southern Spanish city. The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sant, said that this year's La Madruga will be only a “memory because of the rain. There are 385 days left to revive it in our streets during the Holy Week of Seville in 2025,” he wrote on social media. It is the first time since 2011 that the six night processions, at the peak of the Christian Easter week, have been canceled due to bad weather in the Andalusian city. The religious procession had been canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Known as La Madruga and L'Aube, the midnight and dawn services on Good Friday are organized by religious brotherhoods and attract thousands of visitors from around the world.
