Spain has barred a Turkish ship carrying cargo from a Russian ship from entering its waters.
The Turkish tanker Black Star, sailing under the Maltese flag, was not allowed to enter Barcelona on April 27 and has been on board since April 28, apparently awaiting instructions. The tanker is loaded with palm oil and petroleum products, but according to fleetmon and tradewinds the problem is the source of this load.
The Spanish authorities have reasonable suspicions that the cargo was transhipped from the Russian tanker ANDREY PERVOZVANNIY in Maltese waters between 23 and 25 April on an STS operation. The EU has imposed sanctions not only on Russian ships, but also on Russian cargo if they are heading to EU ports. ANDREY PERVOZVANNIY has been sailing in the western Mediterranean since April 28, with Ceuta as its next port of destination. The voyage started from Singapore, the tanker reached the waters of Malta from Singapore via the Port Klang of Malaysia, via Colombo, Jeddah and Suez. Loads of palm oil and derivatives were loaded along this route.
“The Maltese-flagged ship Black Star does not have access to Spanish territorial waters because there is evidence that it was carrying cargo transhipped from the Russian ship Andrey Pervozvanniy, which is subject to EU sanctions,” the Spanish Ministry of Transport said in a statement.
The Spanish authorities had already prevented a stop in Barcelona by “Andrey Pervozvanniy” on April 25, due to European sanctions against Russia for its attack on Ukraine.
