Spain: Close to pre-pandemic levels, the number of tourists in July

More than double the number of tourists visited Spain in July compared to the same month last year, a figure slightly lower than pre-pandemic levels, figures from the National Statistics Service show today.

The 9.1 million visitors in July spent almost 12 billion euros, at least more than double the amount compared to 2021.

Revenues from tourism contribute significantly to the country’s GDP.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic suspended foreign travel in 2020, Spain had received a record number of foreign tourists in 2019 with 9.9 million visiting the country in July of that year.

Tourists from Asia are the only ones who have not returned to the country in the same mass, as the Minister of Tourism, Fernando Valdes, told the public television station TVE.

As he said, the absence of Russian tourists after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine was covered by the increase in tourists from other countries.

Madrid’s government expects tourist arrivals to reach 90% of pre-pandemic levels during this summer season as northern Europeans shrug off worries about rising inflation and plan even more travel than in 2019.
