Spain will continue to provide it AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 in over 60 years based on the opinion of the European Medicines Agency, said today from Dakar, Senegal, the head of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez.
He will use the Russian Sputnik V vaccine if approved by the European health authorities.
“We will continue to vaccinate with AstraZeneca over the age of 60,” Sanchez told a news conference with Senegalese President Maki Sal.
Despite the rare occurrence of blood clots, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) “said we can use AstraZeneca, they say the vaccine is safe,” the Spanish prime minister said.
“In relation to the people who took the first dose, we have to see and hear what the vaccination committee and the health committee (will say),” he added. The French authorities announced today that French people under the age of 55 who have already been vaccinated with the first dose of AstraZeneca will be offered a different vaccine for the second dose.
“What we need to do is listen to the scientists, listen to the experts and our decision will be made in relation to what the experts say,” he said.
Asked about the possibility of using Sputnik V, Sanchez said that “no country is opposed to the Sputnik vaccine, but the European Union says that the vaccines we provide to our citizens in Europe must be approved by the European Medicines Agency.”
“If Sputnik is approved by Coreper, we will certainly be able to include this vaccine in the vaccine portfolio (…), but the vaccine must be approved, this has not happened yet,” he said.
