Spain: Demonstration in Pamplona after allegations of rape and sexual assault at San Fermin festival

Demonstrators with whistles took to its streets today (12/7). Pamplona in Spain to express their anger after police announced that a woman had reported being victimized rape and eight others how they were accepted sexual assaults during his festival San Ferminwhich is world famous for its famous bullfights.

According to Pamplona Mayor Enrique Maya, the woman reported being raped on Saturday. Police are investigating the case, but have not made any arrests or arrests. The municipal council issued a statement condemning the alleged incident.

At the same time, the authorities are on their feet since they happened four complaints from women who claim they were injected with a syringe and given drugs in order to then sexually exploit them – a practice that is increasingly common in Europe with similar incidents reported in Britain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy in recent months. In the cases of the complaints in San Fermin, however, police have no evidence that the women were either sexually assaulted or robbed after being given the drugs.

In 2016, the gang-rape of an 18-year-old girl during the festival sparked an angry reaction from the residents of Pamplona and beyond, while bringing to the fore the need to tighten legislation on sexual violence. Five men were then convicted and sent to prison.

The gang rape of the 18-year-old became known as the ‘Wolf Pack’ case from the name of a WhatsApp group where members circulated videos of the attack.

In June 2021 the Spanish government finally approved a bill defining any non-consensual sexual contact as rape, as part of a wider legislative overhaul that also toughened penalties for sexual harassment and provided for greater support for victims of sexual assault.
