Citizens in Spain were trying today to cool off with fans, water bottles and dives in the fountains as the country experiences unusual high temperatures for this season when in some areas they reached 40 degrees Celsius.
“Early this morning it was unusually hot for this time in a large part of the central and southern part of the peninsula,” the national meteorological service AEMET wrote on Twitter.
The agency warned of high temperatures today in 10 Spanish regions reaching almost 40 degrees Celsius.
Yesterday, Friday, the record of the highest temperature for the month of May was broken in the city of Jaen, Andalusia, where the thermometer reached 40 degrees Celsius.
According to AEMET, the average temperature in Jaen was 16 degrees Celsius higher than the temperature usually recorded at this time.
In other parts of Spain the temperature was at least 7 degrees higher than usual.
As AEMET spokesman Ruben del Campo said earlier this week, if officially confirmed, this will be the first heatwave recorded to date in May.
