After its failed attempt at independence Catalonia in 2017 and the imprisonment of nine Catalan leaders, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, announced that the Spanish government intends to give a pardon and this will be announced on Tuesday 22/6.
With the pardon, which must be approved by the cabinet at its weekly meeting, Sanchez aims to de-escalate tensions in the northeastern region and start negotiations between the central government and the Catalan authorities.
“The controversy did not serve to solve any problems,” Sanchez said in a speech delivered by the Barcelona Opera House at an event attended by about 300 members of Catalan civil society.
“In order to reach an agreement, one must take the first step,” he stressed.
“The Spanish government will take this first step now.”
Polls show that 60% of Spaniards, like all opposition parties, oppose the release of nine politicians and activists who were jailed in 2019 for their role in the chaotic and often violent events that led to the biggest political crisis in Spain in recent decades.
