Spain received 87% fewer tourists in September than last year on the same dates. Specific, 1.1 million international tourists arrived, compared to the 8.8 million who visited us last year. This means that we have lost more than seven million travelers in that month alone.
This means deepening even more the drop registered in previous months, when the decrease in arrivals was also over 70%. In August, for example, 2.4% million tourists arrived, compared to more than 10 million in the same month of 2019.
So far this year 16.8 million foreigners have visited us (74.9% less), while last year at this point 67 million had visited us. We have lost more than 50 million visitors.
As a consequence of this collapse, the total expenditure of these internationals has also made it 89.9% compared to the same month of 2019. In the first nine months, the accumulated expenditure reached 17,715 million euros. In 2019 they were 73,516 million, which means that Spain has stopped earning more than 55,000 million euros.
Complicated fall
September has been a more complicated month than the previous ones, because the second wave of the pandemic was already more advanced and restrictions on mobility have continued. The confinements decreed last week in Germany, France and the Kingdom will complicate the fall even more.
The quarantine in the UK, which has always been our main market, has made France is the main country of residence of the tourists who visit us. 389,773 people from the neighboring country did so in September, 60.4% less compared to the same month last year. They are already 34.2% of the total. The fall in arrival of British people was 92% (161,899 tourists) in September and that of Germans also 92% (90,495).
