Three people have died in the last 24 hours after sustaining serious injuries during bullfighting festivals in Spain’s Valencia region, local officials said on Wednesday.
The three men were injured on different days over the past two weeks but all died within hours this week, in a reminder of just how dangerous these traditional events – which are also a target of criticism from animal rights groups – are.
The city of Picassent held a day of mourning on Wednesday after one of its residents died from severe head trauma after more than a week in intensive care.
Bullfighting festivals, where groups of people race in front of one or more fighting bulls, are a longstanding Spanish tradition, with many cities holding these events every year.
During the eight days of the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona this month, eight people were gored as locals and tourists celebrated the return of bullfighting after a two-year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. No deaths occurred there.
In total, 478 people have been injured this year at these events, which usually end with the death of cattle in the bullfighting arena.
Animal rights group Pacma on Wednesday demanded a ban on what it called a “cruel and dangerous” tradition.
