Spain honors coronavirus victims – Iberian pandemic resurgence is now a fact

THE Spain, one of the European countries hardest hit by the pandemic, today pays official tribute to the victims of Covid-19 and medical staff at a time when it is facing a large increase in new cases despite the progress of the vaccination campaign.

The ceremony, which will be presided over by King Philip VI, began at 09:00 (local time, 10:00 Greek time) in front of the Royal Palace in Madrid, in the presence of the royal family, members of the government, families of the victims and his representatives medical world.

This is the second institutional action of its kind after a first tribute, which was organized in July 2020.

Spain is one of the European countries with the most deaths from the pandemic, as 81,043 deaths were recorded until yesterday, Wednesday, by the Ministry of Health.

While it considered itself on the way out of the crisis, the country now has to deal with an outbreak of cases due to the spread of the Delta variant, mainly among those under 29 years of age.

This resurgence of the pandemic, however, translates into much lower numbers of deaths and illnesses than previous waves, thanks to the vaccination campaign.

Thus, 60% of more than 47 million Spaniards were already vaccinated yesterday, Wednesday, with at least one dose of vaccine and 47.4% are already fully vaccinated, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health.
