The Spanish company Iberdrola has launched an explosive increase in the price of heating gas for domestic consumers, by about 140%, as it seeks to pass on to them the global cost jump.
In particular, Spain’s largest utility company by capitalization, in a note to its customers seen by Bloomberg, states that the estimated annual price of natural gas per kilowatt hour is expected to increase from July 1 to 0.183 euros before taxes, from 0.071 euros that was previously.
At the same time, the fixed charge paid separately by customers will be reduced from 6.08 euros per month to 5.75 euros.
Thus, the total increase in the price that consumers will pay from next month will be of the order of 140%, according to company estimates.
According to the company note, this will be the price of heating gas based on the current conditions and its calculation does not take into account any fluctuations that will occur in the wholesale market in the next 12 months, which means that it may occur further. increase.
It is noted that the Spanish government is working on a plan to impose a ceiling on the price of gas used by utilities to generate electricity. However, the government plan does not provide for a ceiling for gas used by retail customers, although a large proportion of Spanish households use gas for heating and hot water.
An Iberdrola spokesman declined to comment.
