The Russian oligarch yacht, a vessel valued at around 128 million euros, was stopped yesterday Monday in Barcelona, Spain, as part of sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced.
“We have temporarily stopped the yacht of one of the main Russian oligarchs, with an estimated value of 140 million dollars (128 million euros), in Barcelona,” said Mr. Sanchez, explaining that the yacht is “85 meters long” and claiming that “others” will follow, without becoming more specific.
According to the Spanish newspaper El País, this is the yacht Valérie, which is believed to belong to Sergei Tsemezov, the head of Rostec, a Russian defense industry group, a man who is considered to belong to the close circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Sergei Tsemezov is on the list of Russian oligarchs who have been sanctioned by the United States and the United Kingdom since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Western reaction includes the freezing of bank accounts, luxury real estate and yachts owned by Russian tycoons. However, yacht seizures, such as some ships in France and Italy in recent days, are rather rare at the moment.
The ship Amore Vero, a huge yacht worth 100 to 120 million euros, was confiscated last Thursday in France.
Italy announced on Saturday that it had seized assets of Russian oligarchs worth about 140 million euros, including the previous two yachts: Lady M, worth 95 million euros – owned by steel mogul Alexei Mordasov, a man close to President P. which is being sanctioned by the EU – and Lena, worth € 50 million, owned by Gennady Timchenko.
