Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on Sunday (8) that the country’s government is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans.
The speech came in the middle of Edmundo González’s trip to Spain, after the opponent of Nicolás Maduro and former presidential candidate requested political asylum in the country and left Venezuela.
“Edmundo González, at his request, flies to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane,” Albares wrote on his official X account.
Also on X, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Spain welcomes the opponent González.
Opposition in Venezuela
Opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa said on X that although Edmundo González has already left Venezuela, the opposition must continue “fighting” so that what they claim was their victory in the July 28 elections is respected.
“The important thing is that he [González] was elected, that his election was demonstrated and that popular sovereignty must be respected,” said Guanipa.
