Spain: Justice approves curfew in Catalonia

Spanish justice has upheld a night-time curfew in much of Catalonia (northeastern Spain) to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The Supreme Court of Catalonia (TSJC) has announced that it is approving the “measures requested” by the Catalan government, which also include the closure of discos and the restriction of private meetings to a maximum of 10 people.

As the measure violates fundamental freedoms, the Autonomous Government, led by supporters of Catalonia’s independence, had to seek the green light to enforce this curfew from 01:00 to 06: 00 in the morning in all cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants in which the incidence exceeds 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, ie practically at the moment in all.

These restrictions will take effect tonight and will have an initial duration of 15 days in one of the most populous and most touristic regions of Spain.

The ruling came as the central government passed a decree this morning mandating the use of the mask outdoors across the country, which yesterday set a new record of 60,041 cases in 24 hours.

The mandatory use of a mask, which will take effect tomorrow, Friday, and which the government wants “temporary”, will not affect sports activities or people who are alone – or surrounded by people in their homes – “in a natural such as “the mountain or the beach”, said today the Minister of Health Carolina Darias during a press conference.
