Spain: Madrid to send anti-aircraft missiles to Latvia

Spain will send an array of anti-aircraft missiles to Latvia, as well as a hundred soldiers, to strengthen its participation in the NATO mission in this Baltic country, writes today the newspaper El Pais.

The NASAMS surface-to-air missiles will be part of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) planned assistance to the countries bordering Russia after the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, the newspaper explains.

When asked about it on state television, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles simply reiterated Spain’s “absolute commitment” to NATO.

“We have troops in Latvia today, but also in Lithuania, we have our ships in the Mediterranean and we are always available to the maximum extent for a reinforcement if needed to prevent it,” he said without elaborating.

Spain, which will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its NATO membership on Monday, is expected to host the next Alliance summit in late June.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Madrid has also sent military equipment to Ukraine, and the minister recalled Spain’s “full support” for the country, which has been attacked by Russian forces.

“When we defend Ukraine, we defend the values of the Republic, and we oppose the atrocities of (Russian President Vladimir Putin),” he added.
