Spain recorded the first domestic case of the Omicron variant

The Madrid regional authorities announced today that they have detected the first domestic case of the Omicron variant in Spain, in a vaccinated citizen, without connections with countries of danger, and that they are investigating two other similar, suspicious cases.

It is the fourth confirmed case of the variant in Spain, but the first that proves that Omicron is already available in the country.

Yesterday, the region of Catalonia in northeastern Spain reported that it had detected possible traces of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in sewage samples from the end of November.

The person who brought the Omicron variant to Madrid has taken two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and has no history of travel or close contact with another person from countries where the variant has been detected, according to authorities.

The 62-year-old patient, who has been showing mild symptoms since November 29, is in solitary confinement at home, while his close contacts are under quarantine, authorities say.

The other two cases under investigation also had mild symptoms and had no history of travel to high-risk countries.
